The philosophy of life is the focus of Tang Junyi’s philosophical thought. Different from otherscholars’ method in study the philosophy of life, the characteristics of Tang Junyi’s study lies in the fact thathe adopts China’s traditional view of life to modern spiritual value and adopts relatively abstract externalmorality or code of conduct of modern view of life to human beings so as to waken and surpass humanbeings’ intrinsic spiritual value. The author analyzes Tang Junyi’s study of the philosophy of life as a whole. As a starting point,“awakening” and “transcending” are the two key words throughout the whole thesis.“Awakening” refers toawaken the “moral self”. Tang believes that the nature of moral life means that human beings canconsciously control their own life, which highlights Tang’s thought about human beings’ moral issues andhis discussion about how people achieve “moral self” with personal finite power in real life. Tang Junyiargues that three steps are necessary if we intend to awaken the “moral self”, i.e., identifying the root causefor human beings to lose “moral self”, making the good use of the uniquely human beings’“consciousness”and achieving the objective to awaken “moral self” with the ability of “consciousness”.“Transcending”refers to transcend the “real self”. In Tang’s opinion, life has both positive and negative sides and they areopposite and contradictory yet also unified. Overall, Tang is trying to find out a way of transcending the“real self”. He believes that only if one transcends the “real self”, can he make his own transcendence outfrom the secular society. Tang believes that three steps need to be completed in order to transcend the “realself”, i.e., pursuing real life, enriching and developing the “inner self” and transcending the “real self” withhuman beings’ resolution of transcendence.By analyzing Tang Junyi’s philosophy of life, this thesis highlights the “awakening” and“transcending” in his study. The author hopes that the brand new perspective can help readers take a newlook at and explore Tang Junyi’s philosophy of life.
