As one of the most important American writers after WWⅡ,Mary FlanneryO’Connor’s pious religious belief and habit of self-examination bestow her profoundthought and sagacious perception, with which she analyzes the complicated innerworld and distorted souls of human being in contemporary society. In her lucid buttragic descriptions, various nobodys and phenomena of bizarre and preposterous livesof diverse people, together constitute a metaphor world which is filled with cautionaryand moralizating allegories. This paper tries to explore and undertand the theme ofestrangement in works of O’Connor so that the author can demostrate the internalmeaning and real value intensively as much as possible. This thesis is divided into three chapters to discuss the topic.Chapter one firstlycorroborates what is estrangement in universal meaning, which leads to the dimensionof estrangement in works of O’Connor, including three subsections:the definition ofestrangement, the reason of estrangement, the manifestation of estrangement andthe final stage of estrangement. Chapter Two elaborates the symbolic presentation ofestrangemnt in works of O’Connor and makes an thorough inquiry into the symbol ofestrangement that often appears in her works, including hats, glasses and cars.Theobstruction of hats makes people unable to comprehend the God’s redemption, thuscannot bridge the alienation with the God;glasses makes people’s visions blurred;carsbring people far from hometowns, having no one to depend upon. And these imagesform organisms one by one, every time their appearance and disappearance canproliferate different meanings.Chapter three mainly studies the realistic meaning oftheme of estrangemen. Finally, the paper summarizes the unique mental ethos andanalyzes the stunning charm of works by O’Connor.
