S.E. Hinton is one of the most important young adult novelist in America, andher debut The Outsiders leads the trend of new realism in the field of young adultnovels, which removed the cozy veil of white middle-class life depicting that Jane andMary went to the prom. In The Outsiders she passionately tells the story of Greasers hard growth under the discrimination and persecution of the rich Socs withcompassion which greatly influenced the later novels in new realist young adultnovels.This thesis analyzes the creativeness of The Outsiders from the perspectives ofthemes, characters and language features. Then taking The Chocolate War, Out of theDust and The Hero Ain t Nothin But a Sandwich as examples, its influence on laternovels will be explored from the three aspects above.This thesis consists of five parts:Introduction gives a brief introduction to S.E. Hinton and her masterpiece TheOutsiders, the definition of new realism of young adult literature and summarizes thecurrent research on it at home and abroad and then puts forward the central argumentof this thesis.Chapter One discusses the creativeness of The Outsiders from themes, and itsinfluence on later new realism young adult novels by analyzing of The Chocolate War.Chapter Two discusses the creativeness of The Outsiders from characters and itsinfluence on later novels in this field by interpreting A. Childress A Hero Ain tNothin But a Sandwich.Chapter Three analyzes the creativeness of The Outsiders on language featuresand its influence on later novels in this field by analyzing of A Hero Ain t Nothin Buta Sandwich and the Newbery winner Out of the Dust.Conclusion summaries the central argument and at the same time enforces thesignificance and value of The Outsiders.
