A Report On The Translation Of Guests’ Speeches In The13th Unesco International Mother Language Day Celebration

In recent years, with the deepening of international communication, more international conferences are held in China. One of the important purposes of international conferences is to provide opportunities for the guests to communicate ideas and the latest research achievements with each other. The accurate translation of speech not only can facilitate the communication between the conference attendees, but also can promote the further cooperation.The translation practice is based on the guests’speech texts of the13th UNESCO International Mother Language Day. After translating four guests’ speech texts from Chinese to English, the author completed the translation report on the issues of the problems of the translation version. The translation report consists of six parts. The first part is the general introduction of the translation practice. Secondly, the thesis gives a general introduction to the speech texts, including the actual situation of the UNESCO International Mother Language Day Celebration, the general introduction of speech texts as well as the present situation of speech translation studies at home and abroad. After that, it is the introduction of the author’s preparation before translating the speech texts, including theory preparation, practice preparation and material preparation. The next part mainly analyzes the language problems in translation procedure, which is analyzed from three perspectives:vocabulary and expression translation, idiom translation and sentence translation. Therefore, plenty of translation strategies are utilized comprehensively for the accurate translation. Then the difficulties and implications of the translation are listed. Finally, the conclusion of the whole translation report is drawn in the last part.It is found that the translation of international conferences’speech texts belong to the pragmatic translation, and the functionalist translation theory can give appropriate guidance for the pragmatic translation, therefore, the strategies like adaptation, amplification based on functionalist translation theory are used comprehensively to the translation of the speech texts. It is hoped the translation practice and the translation report can provide inspiration for the future study.
