Idioms, with simple forms and vivid languages, are a kind of special idiomsthose are easy to understand. Most Chinese idioms achieved meaning transference offigures of speech through metaphor, that leads to big distinguish between their literalmeanings and deep meanings. This causes difficulties in learning Chinese idioms offoreign students. In order to help foreign students to learn Chinese idioms, this thesisanalyses30Chinese idioms.The thesis concludes four parts mainly:Firstly, this thesis introduces the significance of the topic, current research,theory basis, research methods, and corps source.Secondly, based on others’ achievements, this thesis distinguishes idioms withproverbs, and analyzes and summarizes the characteristics of Chinese idioms insemantics, pragmatics, voice, and structure.Thirdly, based on the conceptual metaphor and metonymy cognitive theory ofLakoff and Johnson, this thesis analyses and interprets30Chinese idioms, andanalyses the effects of metaphor and metonymy of meanings in the process of idiomsemantic extension.Last, on teaching Chinese as a foreign language, this thesis analyzes thesignificance of teaching Chinese idioms in teaching Chinese as a foreign language,ranks Chinese idioms, and proposes some teaching principles and strategies.
