In the open and pluralistic literary context of the new century, Chinese femalenovels, which were once with different sounds at the end of the last century, haveentered a period of self-adjustment with more rational attitudes. On one hand, female writers are trying to get breakthroughs in themes and characters to explorenew spaces for novels; on the other hand, they are balancing between the mode ofdiscourse and the gender awareness to figure out new female narrative strategies.Besides the introduction and conclusion section, the thesis is divided into threechapters. The introduction remarks the concepts of female literature to clarify thestudy scope and target, i.e., setting year2000as a starting point, choosing therelated novels firstly published during that period of time. Moreover, these novelshave to convey female “modern humanism”. The thesis takes the diversification ofthemes, the reconstruction of gender roles and the female narrative strategies asthree aspects. Looking back on the overall female writing style and some relatedtexts in the1990s, the first chapter discusses the new change of female novels in the2000s in terms of the subject selection so as to furtherly analyze the changingattitudes hidden behind. The second chapter analyzes male and female roles inspecific texts with archetypal criticism. The female roles filled with tension and maleroles who are more rational indicate the response to the call of gender harmony. Thethird chapter remarks grand narrative, daily narrative and bottom class narrative withnarratology and feminism criticism to explore the means of conveying genderawareness and narrative strategies in different texts. The conclusion summarizes theoverall situation of the female novels in the new century and prospects the femalenovel development. It also points out that the female narrative might be caught into“Breakout” and “Standfast” dilemma.
