Xu Kun’s series of literary works with the subjects of intellectuals or female urban life has attracted much attention from the critics. On the one hand, Xu Kun’s characters of office ladies strive to escape the bondage of families and the marriage cages to pursue free, equal and ideal love, fight for economic independence and higher social status and realize self-value. On the other hand, they long for spiritual and emotional regression, and for family warmth and dependence on men.Xu Kun’s description of the urban office ladies fully shows his human touch for them. His novels focus on images of urban office ladies, demonstrating their survival state, emotional world, spiritual pursuit, revealing his points on women’s life and spiritual status from the female perspective. By revealing their journey of mind, he highlights their independent awareness. Under the pen of Xu Kun, the urban office ladies have respectable status in the society, and they also pursuit equal status in the family. All the urban office ladies created by Xu Kun attempt to look for the right of discourse of women. Xu Kun explores the fate of urban office ladies in a patriarchal culture, and explores the relationship between men and women. With their clearing up male hegemonic discourse, the author tries to find out the root of the dilemma of female gender, call for harmonious relationship between men and women and reflect over the relation. The slogan "Equality between men and women" increases self-awareness of females, but male hegemonic discourse and female collective unawareness result in unreal equality between men and women.In the city, the office lady is an element, and the city is their "battlefields" of growing up. Xu Kun has revealed the current urban people’s life experience, whether the phenomenon of materialization and the money worship which widely exist in the modern city or the civilization diseases in the modern city. Xu Kun’s reflection over urban women’s life status and the relationship between men and women, and his concerns on relationship between city and women culture show his cultural connotation in urban office ladies. What’s more, his works written during the economic and cultural transformation and the true portrayal of his own experience and feelings not only reveal his cause to construct the image of urban office ladies, but also are of certain significance of the times.
