“Poetry”, conceived in social life and nature, is an important aesthetic category in Chinese classicalaesthetics. It is a novel and exquisite essence of art, making the creators touched and the viewers excited. And it is a spiritual motivation to the human existence and development."Poetry" is not exclusive toliterature. It’s also flourishing in painting. Therefore, we can explore Lin Fengmian’s and Modigliani’spaintings to find and understand the "poetic" characteristics.Lin Fengmian and Modigliani are two representativess of east and west paintings respectively in thelate19th Century and the early20th Century. Although Different as they are, their paintings both tend to besimple, with poetic flavor so soothing and refreshing emerging from the pictures. They both have madegreat achievement in their own field. They each use their specific way to create distinctive beauties throughlines, colours, shapes and planes, and thus pursue poetic peace and inner freedom.Lin Fengmian’s paintings have poetic feelings reflecting the characteristics of Oriental culture andsending Chinese art’s inherent spirit connotation. Compositions, lines and mixings of ink and colour and offeeling and scenery in his paintingsbreake some taboos of Chinese paintings to a hitherto unknown height, and give people the enjoyment of poetry. Modigliani’s unique poetic temperament deeply creates a specialartistic style. By the influence of the times, a "classical complex" is always haunting in the shape andaesthetics of his paintings.. From either the reclining or erect human body in his paintings, we can see theelongated body proportion, neurotic lines and depressive eyes. These bodies are atural-shaped andgraceful-postured, from which we can sense a classic and poetic beauty of peace and maturity. They both have a grim destiny. and figures in their paintings, each being specifically characterized, atthe meantime, all show an expression of depression and sadness, like they are feeling what their creator’sfeeling. And probably this very sadness thus make these paintings more poetic. In the tide of the times, theystill adhere to themselves, respect individuality. Figures in their paintings, like elegant lyrics are sointoxicating. By appreciating the two masters’ works, we can sense the poetic language, which give us notonly the visual aesthetic feelings, but spiritual enjoyment as well. This paper, through studying the twomasters’ paintings, will make a deep exploration of poetic quality in their paintings.
