Sinclair Lewis was the first author who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in America. His works portrayed the life of Americans, and they exposed existing social problems in the USA. During Sinclair Lewis’whole life, there were about20novels were published. And these novels which were published in1920s helped him achieve the highest literary achievements. As for this article, it takes Lewis’s three novels Main Street, Babbitt and Arrowsmith that published in1920s for example, in order to analysis critiques of social consciousness in Sinclair Lewis’s novels. Sinclair Lewis criticized materialistic society, integration of politics and Standardization of life fiercely. However, his critiques about the USA were out of love instead of hatred, and he was dreamed of a better America. This article relates and analyzes the society ideal which was expressed in Lewis’ novels. In addition, this article also discusses the artistic employment in his novels. Lewis utilized various techniques in his novels, and exposed America’s social phenomena at that time. His detailed descriptions made his articles more realistic; the usage of typical principles made the criticism more extensive; and the comparative methods helped a lot in satirizing and criticizing exiting problems in the USA at that time.
