Cooperation and exchange in the fields such as politic, economic, culture.etc. between China and other country is increasingly growing, as the trend of globalization becomes inevitability. To elevate the soft Chinese cultural strength, we should know better how to promote Chinese traditional culture. Therefore, the importance of culture translation is without doubt.Beginning with a review of the long-standing debate between foreignization and domestication concerning culture translation, this paper explores the culture-loaded words in Six Chapters of a Floating Life translated by Lin Yutang, with an aim to reveal Lin’s translation strategy and methods, then probes the reason under the rewriting theory why he choose those strategy and methods to translate through analyzing his poetics and the ideology of that time. This study shows:when dealing with the cultural words, trans-lators should follow the principle of foreignization first so as to keep the characteristics of Chinese culture. Then they should consider suiting the conventions of the English lan-guage to make target texts more acceptable and readable to target readers. This paper is designed to offer some advice toward literal and non-literal translation.
