| Jiehua, also called boundary drawing in English, is a very distinctive category of Chinese Painting.With the social improvement, Jiehua paintings in the Northern Song Dynasty became free from itspracticality gradually and formed an unique artistic style. Jiehua painters then overcame severalshortcomings which had existed in the former Jiehua painitings, such as improper perspective method,confusing primary with secondary, the indeterminate relation between blankness and actuality and so on.Meanwhile, they extended the artistic vision of Jiehua to the civil customs, building community, vessel andvehicle travel and so on, which expanded the theme of Jiehua to a large extent. Jiehua paintings in theNorthern Song Dynasty had made a great achievement in the aspect of its artistic level, prosperity and itsstatus in the art scene, which the Jiehua paintings in the other dynasties could never compare with. Thisthesis tries to research the creation of the sense of space and the artistic expression of the Jiehua paintingsin the Northern Song Dynasty meticulously from both macroscopic and microcosmic perspective bycombining the artistic sight with scientific method.This thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter one traces Jiehua’s origins, looks back at its developmentsin each dynasty of ancient China, overviews its prosperity in Northern Song dynasty by citing historicaldocuments and analyzes the reason for Jiehua’s prosperity in Northern Song dynasty.Chapter twosummarizes the Jiehua’s whole characteristics in Northern Song Dynasty of distinct sense of hierarchy,strong realistic style, rigorous veracity and folk-custom and close-to-life style according to the analysis ofthe existing Jiehua paintings in Northern Song Dynasty and the research of historical documents.Chapterthree, by analyzing comparing and researching the Jiehua paintings in Northern Song Dynasty, dissectshow the Jiehua painters in Northern Song Dynasty created the sense of space and three dimension in theJiehua paintings ingeniously and kept it in a state of harmony with the natural environment by theintegrated mathematical means of the geometric principles and perspective principles and so on.Chapterfour further analyzes the unique approaches to artistic expression of the Jiehua paintings in Northern SongDynasty from the microcosmic point of view. Based on the individual existing Jiehua paintings, this chapteranalyzes the Golden ratio presented in the Jiehua paintings in Northern Song Dynasty from a scientific perspective and the skillful use of traditional artistic language in these paintings from an artistic perspectiveand shows the subtle spirit of the artistic beauty in Northern Song Dynasty’s Jiehua paintings.Chapter fivediscusses the evolution of the Jiehua paintings from the Northern Song Dynasty to the Southern SongDynasty from a macroscopic perspective and its meaning in Chinese art history. According to deep analysisand compare, this chapter summarizes the changes the Jiehua paintings had made from the Northern SongDynasty to the South Song Dynasty and the aesthetic value and historical significance of the change.Based on summing up the main point in each chapter, the conclusion part of the thesis raises thecurrent meaning of this research and the enlightenment to nowadays. The research could provide areference for repairing or rebuilding the construction of Northern Song Dynasty and be an inspiration forbuilding a new socialist countryside. The unique way to create the sense of space in Northern SongDynasty’s Jiehua paintings might also provide the inspiration for the contemporary painters. |
