Under the circumstances of rapid development of economic globalization, politicalmulti-polarity and cultural pluralism, the ties among countries and regions all throughout theworld are developing gradually closer and closer. With the necessarily gathering exchanges ofeconomics, politics and culture, the usage of translation in various directions has becomeincreasingly popular, and the importance of the translation study has aroused strong interestand extensive concern.Because of long process of historical development, distinctive living surroundings andenvironment, different people in different culture have formed different attitude toward nature,and hold their own folk customs, belief, unique religion, patterns of behavior and lifestyle.Influenced by all those aspects we have mentioned above, the words and expressions, whichare created by different people with different cultural background in their own distinctivephonetic and grammatical systems, can be called culturally-loaded words. The special culturalconnotations and characteristics of culturally-loaded words make it hard in the culturalexchanges and communication. So in many cases, the translator’s stumbling block in theprocess of translating is how to deal with culturally-loaded words. And the understanding ofculturally-loaded words play a decisive role in the translation,cultural exchanges andcommunications, the research and study of culturally-loaded words appear particularlyimportant.Taking the culturally-loaded words in one of Mo Yan’s famous works Big Breasts andWide Hips as examples and bringing the translation in the contemporary American famousliterary translator Ge Wenhao’s English version of Big Breasts and Wide Hips as researchobject, this paper from the perspective of relevance theory will analyze the problems and difficulties which encountered in the process of the culturally-loaded words translation, searchthe essential strategies of translation, and attempt to convey the information of the source textto the target reader by the way of optimal relevance, in order to prove the strong power ofexplanation of relevance theory to translation and also provides a new perspective for theculturally-loaded words translation.
