Although a research on cultivation of ICC in the field of English has been discussedand implemented for many years in China, there are still two misunderstandings. First, misunderstanding that linguistic competence and pragmatic competence is completelydirect proportion; second, most of the study subjects described is examples of differentstyles of pragmatic failure without discussing the origin of pragmatic failure andprecautionary measures. Moreover, seldom do people think about the root causes ofpragmatic failures and the cultivation of inter-cultural communicative competence. Thepurpose of this dissertation is to study these two misunderstandings deeply. As morefrequency and more failures of intercultural communication occurred, linguists at homeand abroad put more attention to a research on cultivation of ICC based on the analysis ofpragmatic failures, which has great academic value. The current study under the direction of Spitzberg&Cupach’s three elements oftheory, combined quantitative with qualitative research methods, it mainly attempts toelaborate research questions as:①The current situation of students’ ICC.②The root ofpragmatic failures in Inter-cultural communication.③Cultivation of ICC. First, I did aquestionnaire on ICC for college students, and use it as the data of assistant study. Second,I summarized the achievements, which given by domestics and foreign experts inInter-cultural communication. I collected a large number of typical cases, which has muchto do with life and reasonable classification of these data, based on case study, in-depthanalysis for the root causes of pragmatic failure summarized the characteristics ofpragmatic failure. To further put forward preventive measures and eventually bring out thestrategy of cultivation of ICC.Main Findings: First, linguistic competence is not proportional to pragmaticcompetence. Second, grasping of language system knowledge has little to do withpragmatic competence. Third,The effective way that cultivates pragmatic competence isnot pursuing the acquisition of systemic language knowledge, but combining the theorywith practice. Besides, for the limitations of the study and recommendations for future research arealso presented my views.
