This paper studies the politeness strategies in micro-interviews in the Chinesesocio-cultural context. As a new communicational tool, Weibo enters the lives ofpeople, which has a great impact on the whole society and people’s lives. So far, there are many researches on politeness strategies in the network environment, suchas chat rooms, BBS forums, QQ language and so on. However, no scholars havedone similar researches in the Weibo environment. Actually, the Weibo language is apart of the language of computer-mediated communication, which has become animportant research area in linguistics. In this paper, Brown&Levinson’s politenesstheory is applied as the framework to analyze the exchanges in the micro-interviewsin order to find out whether Brown&Levinson’s politeness theory which is based onthe fact-to-face communications can still be applied in the micro-interviews and alsoexplore the features of politeness strategies used in the micro-interview.It is found that although Brown&Levinson’s politeness theory is based on theface-to-face communications, it is still applicable in the micro-interviews. On theother hand, owing to some unique characteristics of politeness strategies used in themicro-interview, for example, strengthening, weakening and changes of thepoliteness strategies, Brown&Levinson’s politeness theory is not completelyapplicable in the micro-interview.At the same time, the author tries to explore the social-cultural reasons behindthese politeness strategies used in the micro-interview so as to fully explain thecharacteristics of politeness strategies in the micro-interview. The author hopes thatthis research can make a contribution to the politeness researches in the networkenvironment, and also extend the use of Brown&Levinson’s face theory to themicro-interview. This aims at helping people to better achieve the communicative goals in computer-mediated communications and also revealing how networklanguage influences the language and behavior of people in the future.
