Report On Translation Of Revisited Poland

The essay, Poland Revisited, is selected from part two of Notes on Life and Letters by Conrad. It tells his experience of revisiting Poland, his home town. He described his ideas and passions through slices of life. This essay shows the author’s feelings during his trip with his family and friends before the First World War. When they were on the road, the First World War broke out. Therefore, the author felt sad and helpless by observing Poland’s falling. It is very rare for a foreigner to write novels and essays in English. But Conrad’s English novels are well received by the English world. This work has a lot of psychological descriptions in modern stream of consciousness, but a few dialogues. Poland Revisited provides some clues for the reader to know the author’s life and to study his other works. The translator uses Nida’s theory of functional equivalence as guide in the translation of the essay, and applied various other translation methods, such as annotation, addition, deletion, and translation variation, to translate this essay in order to express author’s idea accurately.
