| Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is a critical study approach of Discourse Analysis.By analyzing news text, we mainly apply CDA to uncover those hidden ideologies in newsdiscourse, to explore the relationship between language and ideology, and to improvereaders’ sensitivity to news reports. The author would present the subtle relationshipbetween language and different cultures as well as the importance of critical reading.By conducting a CDA of nine news reports selected from the Guardian, this thesisintends to discuss how the reporters employ language to show their attitudes and ideologieswith the theoretical framework and analytical categories based on Fairclough’s approach ofCDA and Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar. The author would analyze the linguisticfeatures of the collected news reports in terms of lexical choice, transitivity system, andtransformation system in first stage; By combining the analysis of the relationship betweendiscourse and newsmakers, the author intends to analyze the process of generating a newsdiscourse in terms of the analysis of reporting mode and news sources in second stage; theauthor would explain how the social and cultural facts influence the procedure of generatinga news discourse in third stage. The analysis proves that there is a dialectical relationship between news discourse andideology; the author would argue that it partially because news discourse would beinfluenced by the ideology of society, and news discourse constructs and maintains theideology and the social structure at the same time. By reviewing the literature andconducting the analysis, this thesis, on the one hand, would test and verify the reliability ofthe CDA; on the other, it would try to expose the influence of ideology of using language innews reports, and would also try to raise certain attention to the critical reading of westernmedia. |
