Cold Food Festival is an important traditional festival in ancient China, carryingthe ancestors’ notion of the age and the collective wisdom, boasting rich cultureaccumulation. Cold Food Festival, a representative of the elapsing of the traditionalfestivals in our country, can be traced back to the Zhou Dynasty and declinedgradually to Southern Song Dynasty. The thesis aims at interpreting the deep culturalsignificance the Cold Food Festival contains from the overall cultural perspective.This thesis, applying famous American cultural anthropologist Clifford Geertz’scultural interpretation theory, expounds the deep cultural connotation of suchtraditions as fire ban, cold food, ancestral worship, cockfighting, cockfighting eggsand reveals the interrelationship between tradition and society, economy, culturalconsciousness, cultural personality in the evolution process. After the in-depthdescription of the Cold Food Festival customs, the thesis analyzes the reasons of thecombination of Cold Food Festival and Tomb Sweeping Day, and explores theinternal and external unstable factors in the inheritance and evolution process to graspthe law of changing in its inheritance as well. The Cold Food Festival is abundant incultural heritage and is a special case of traditional festival’s cultural change. Bystudying Cold Food Festival, the thesis reflects the deficiencies in reservingtraditional festivals under the context of globalization and advances the measurestowards the heritage and reserve of them in our country, in accordance with thedevelopment law of festivals.
