Although a great importance has been attached to the pathological mechanisms and riskfactors of cognitive impairment in the past decades, the effective solutions to treat or preventcognitive impairment have not been found so far. So more and more studies focus especially onactivities engagement the protective factors of cognitive impairment. In order to study therelationship between activities engagement and cognitive impairment, this paper carried out adetailed literature review about previous research, investigation technique was used to study496people aged60and over. The results showed that <The elderly activities engagementquestionnaire> with good reliability and validity was developed, also the status of the elderlyactivities engagement and cognitive impairment and its influences has been analysed. In depthexplored the protective role of different activities in cognitive impairment, while used statisticalmodelling techniques to investigate the interaction between the different types of activities in theprotective role and the position occupied of activities engagement in the cognitive impairment riskfactors.The conclusions drawn in this article are as follows:(1) The elderly engagement activitiesfrom more to less are: activities of daily living, social interaction activities, intelligence activities,sports activities, and46.37%older people with cognitive impairment in this study sample. Thetotal score of activities engagement can improve scores of the elderly in the test of cognitivefunction. Intelligence activities and activities of daily living will significantly impact cognitiveimpairment. Social interaction activities and sports just have small amount mediating effect oncognitive impairment by the intelligence activities. The predicted effect of age and education levelis both greater than various activities in cognitive impairment.(2)<The elderly activitiesengagement questionnaire> was developed by this study. The questionnaire mainly involved fourdimensions: intelligence activities, social interaction activities, sports activities and daily livingactivities. The reliability and validity of the questionnaire achieve psychometric requirements.(3)There are significant differences in activities engagement in different region, gender, residence, age,education level, marital status. Including, the relationship between age and educational level inactivities engagement is more complex: the total score of activities engagement diminishing withthe age increase, but the higher level of education also has higher total score in activitiesengagement; in various activities, the education level has bigger effect than age, there is significantinteraction in sports activities and activities of daily living.(4) There are significant differences of elderly cognitive impairment in different region, age, education level, marital status and occupation.In age, the mild cognitive impairment elderly grow older, there will be a larger proportion turned tosevere cognitive impairment. Scale MMSE-C rating threshold is partial strict for Chinese elderlywho got the higher education level.In conclusion, this study investigated the status of the elderly activities engagement andcognitive impairment, the research data and conclusions complement and enrich the existingresearch results. The delay mechanism and mode of intervention could base on the relationshipresearch between the activities engagement and cognitive impairment. In practice, the elderly canrefer to the results of this study to choose the activities which have good protective effect oncognitive function to participation and further to achieve the purpose of the prevention of dementia,and healthy aging.
