Zhao Qi, as a realist painter, involves the feelings of people; love of the land and theattitude to history into his own works, showing the artistic charm of realism in the view ofaesthetic understanding and meaning of life, and creates new value criterion of realisticpainting. At this point, he reconstructs some factors of realistic art in the aspect ofsolemnity and aesthetic. He learns from the traditional style of the ancient, and createsvigorous, extensive and profound, masculine and wide features with texturing method oflandscape used in Song Dynasty, and also he creates the new aesthetical standard of figurepainting. His unique painting style attracts a large number of appreciators. His figurepainting completely shows the feelings brought by the history, which gives the art ofpainting with ideological and social value. Zhao Qi’s paintings have a great contribution tothe art of Chinese painting, which is worthy of our continuous research..The thesis aims at researching how Zhao Qi reflected the historical connotation in hisfreehand figure paintings and illustrating the value and meaning of painting throughcopying Zhao Qi’s paintings and looking up the documents and materials related to ZhaoQi and painting art, including the research in Zhao Qi’s album of painting, and collectingsome information from related theoretical research, poems and prose.Firstly the thesis briefly introduces the overall appearance of Zhao Qi’s artistic creation andhis life experience and painting. Secondly it focus on analyzing how Zhao Qi showed thehistorical connotation in his freehand figure paintings from the aspects of materialselection, theme, composition, painting, color, shape, and emotion. Finally, the thesisindicates the significance of Zhao Qi’s paintings to the development of Chinese painting.Zhao Qi’s freehand figure painting is somewhat different from the self-appreciationpaintings for self-entertainment, and also different from the arts which only satisfyaesthetic demand. His works is full of sense of historical and social responsibility, whichhas national characteristic and spiritual meaning, and has cognition, education andaesthetics functions.
