Margaret Walker (1915-1998) is one of the most contemporary influential Black womanwriters in America. Because of rich achievements in the creation of literature, she attractedextensive attention of critics. Her famous novel, Jubilee, wrote down the history of Black slaveryand the American civil war by a new point of view and writing techniques, is considered tocompare favorably with Gone with the wind. This paper summarizes Walker wrote the historyfrom the three viewpoints by means of analyzing the conjunctions of Jubilee and NewHistoricism, which are race, traditional Black culture and gender. In other word, this paper is toanalyze how Walker reviewed Black history, excavated the Black traditional culture, created anew image of Blacks and visualize the relationship models between Blacks and White Americanfrom a view of Black women. Above all are the main problems which will be solved in this paper,and also connotation of thought Walker wanted to show in Jubilee.The paper is divided into four chapters. The first one mainly introduces the author’s creativeand outline of Jubilee, domestic and foreign research present situation, and this paper selectedtopic basis and innovation points. The second discusses issues of American black history writing.Writing of the history of American blacks has long been dominated by White American, andconsciously faded away the traces and demonized image.Affected by this and the black nationalself-consciousness awakening, Black writers have joined to rewrite the black history. It fits theNew Historicism theory about the relationship between history and this paper. The third analyzesthe uniqueness of writing history. Walker wrote history from the viewpoints of ethnic culture andgender, content of her writing is traditional and the modern, include all aspects of blacks life. Thecharacteristic fits New Historicism which advocates the “histories”. The last finds out thecreation intention of Walker. In the process of reviewing the history of the black,she excavatedthe Black traditional culture,importance to the role of the black women and advocate livetogether in peace between black and white. All of those creation intentions contain subversion.
