Virginia Woolf is really a pioneer writer in modern literary history who strives to explore anew art form to precisely depict the inner reality of human beings. She adopts the modernwriting technique which is very different from the traditional one. The thesis will explore abrand new narrative strategy and new literary form and the modernist theme in The Mark onthe Wall from the perspective of modernism. Time and space form are very important factorsin modernist literature, and the grasp of them can help readers get a more profoundunderstanding of the novel both in the aspect of time and space. A better understanding on themodernist writing style and technique will be achieved through the analysis on Woolf’s poeticfeatures. The modernist themes reflected in the novel explain her thought about literature andthe patriarchal society. Woolf achieves the modernist transformation of the novel through herunique way.
