An Application Study On The Chinese Translation Of English Metaphorical Idioms Under The Conceptual Integration Theory

Idioms，which play a very important role in language and culture，are the commondiscourse type in human language, they are usually regarded as the essence of languages withsimple structures but extraordinary implications. Each kind of language includes a largenumber of idioms, and most of them are metaphorically. How to translate idioms accuratelyand smoothly is very important for intercultural communication. The main reason for thedifficulty in Chinese translation of English idioms is the large numbers of metaphorscontained in them. Therefore, the study of English metaphorical idioms is very valuable.Conceptual integration theory as the important branch in cognitive linguistics provides anew perspective for translation studies and has great explanatory power in the study oftranslation processes. How to apply the conceptual integration theory into the translationpractice is an extremely valuable research topic. In view of the metaphorical phenomenon inEnglish idioms, taking conceptual integration theory as the theoretical basis and the Englishmetaphorical idioms as the corpus, this thesis tries to have an interpretation for the processesof Chinese translation of English metaphorical idioms. It is designed to provide scientific andfeasible framework network for the cognitive processes of the English metaphorical idiomstranslation and have a validation of the feasibility of conceptual integration theory for theChinese translation of English metaphorical idioms. Through the three main types ofconceptual integration network, summarizes the translation strategies of English metaphoricalidioms under the conceptual integration network frames, providing a new perspective in thetranslation of English idioms translation.Through the analysis of specific translation cases, studying the research question of whythe conceptual integration theory is feasible to apply in the study of the Chinese translation ofEnglish metaphorical idioms? The second one is to what extent does the conceptualintegration theory has its explanatory power in the Chinese translation of Englishmetaphorical idioms? And the last one is what are the effective strategies for the Chinesetranslation of English metaphorical idioms under the guide of CIT? It is proved thatconceptual integration theory has certain explanatory power for the Chinese translation of theEnglish metaphorical idioms. And can provide effective translation networks for the cognitiveprocesses of the Chinese translation of English metaphorical idioms. For the different specifictranslation cases under different network models of the conceptual integration theory,different translation strategies are taken based on the culture-oriented or receptor-oriented. The combination between conceptual integration theory and English metaphoricalidioms translation is conducive not only to the development of conceptual integration theorybut also to the study of English idioms. Although conceptual integration theory has beenwidely applied to different literary style translation practice, but researches on metaphoricalidioms are scanty. This thesis explores the feasibility of Chinese translation of Englishmetaphorical idioms from the perspective of concept integration theory, finds out thetranslation methods of metaphorical idioms on the basis of fully understanding of the deepmetaphorical meaning and makes an all round analysis of the translator’s cognitive activitiesduring the translation. It aims to enhance the scientificity and accuracy of metaphorical idiomtranslation and brings certain enlightenment for further studies on English-Chinesetranslation.
