This thesis mainly investigates the patterns and color of ancient Chinese bronze and lacquer ware. The bronze ware originates from the Shang and Zhou Dynasty, while the examined lacquer ware is from the Shang to Qing Dynasty. The research focuses on the aesthetic aspects and sensuous classification. Both pattern and color of bronze and lacquer ware were important parts of arts and crafts in ancient China. Classification of these artworks cannot only help researchers of traditional patterns to a more complete understanding; it can also help designers in choosing the right patterns. Most importantly, it provides a new view and method for categorizing and researching visual material. In the famed artist Arnheim’s view, art is experienced starting from the first feeling at anytime and anywhere. From this feeling, although hard to define, we can obtain a certain kind of revelation. These methods provide designers a medium for their work. As far as we know, about80percent of outside information is acquired through visual sense, while information on texture of an object can be achieved with our tactile sense. Most art works are mainly experienced in a visual way and only partly in other ways. The tactual sensation combined with the visual sensation can give people a different aesthetic meaning and mental feeling. The link of tactual and visual sensation is produced when we see works with a certain texture. This special link is closely related to the one’s we experience in life. Tactual and visual sensations jointly give the complete view on art. With the development of new and much needed materials in daily life it is important to give a new construct while still preserving a familiar, realistic and natural texture. Tactual feeling is vitally important. How do we classify the reproduced image in our mind? Images and colors can become linked to certain feelings and experiences, for example Taotie texture makes people feel terrible and is commonly linked with sacrifice. Thereafter we can summarize the regulations and analyze the necessity of the use of specified materials in current works. Then the materials can be potentially used for modern design. This material is not only physical but also related to the image, color and so on. The summarization of so-called sensation can give guidance for future activities in design.
