With the globalization of economy, the popularization and teaching of English captures more and more attention. It’s inevitable that oral English, which directly reflects one’s English proficiency becomes the domain that many scholars fastened their eyes on. Consequently, the argument between NESTs and NNESTs have come out and never tided down since foreign teachers were first introduced into China. Normally speaking, NESTs are regarded as best option for oral English teaching, but NNSETs enjoy the advantage of sharing mother tongue with students. Therefore, what are the differences between two camps of teachers in oral English teaching? What are the strengths and drawbacks of the two respectively? Do their strengths and drawbacks have direct influence on students’oral performance? Those are the questions that the paper will probe into. Two class, chosen through Independent Sample T test as subject would be assigned a NEST and a NNEST accordingly. Then class observation and tape recording were employed to collect data that would be used to make a comparison of the two teachers. Finally, students of two classes were given same oral English test to check their oral performance after a period of teaching. The study found several differences between NEST and NNEST. Apart from flexible use of English, NEST was a rich source of western culture; on most occasions, NEST’s classes were animated and lively due to his humorous way of teaching; he used non-verbal language in great abundance and habitually praised student; his class was more student-centered. While NNEST’s classes were more systemic and goal-oriented; sharing mother tongue enabled her to have a better communication with students; she knew well of students’s difficulty in learning English thus offering more effective solutions. Comparing with NEST she attached more emphasis on language input and grammar. However, the final test indicated that there was not significant difference between two classes of students in tets score, content, grammatical range and fluency and coherence apart from pronunciation and intonation. In conclusion, although NESTs and NNESTs have their own advantages and disadvantages respectively, those strengths and drawbacks were not reflected in students oral performance. However, if they learn from each others’s strong points to offset own weakness, their class would bound to be better received by students. In view of students’ capability and shortage of NESTs, non-key universities could arrange more NNESTs in oral English teaching. What’more, the exchange and cooperation between NESTs and NNESTs should be strengthened to make greater contribution to oral English teaching in China.
