Vocabulary plays an important role in language acquisition. All languages havevocabulary. Some linguists summed up the importance of vocabulary learning andemphasized that without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabularynothing can be conveyed. Due to the importance of the vocabulary, foreign languagelearners must develop good vocabulary knowledge in order to make sense of whatthey hear and read, and to express them fluently and appropriately. However, what isthe reality like in non-English majors? Whether they have the awareness to uselearning strategies? To get the answer, the author intends to conduct an investigationof it, employing the research methods of questionnaires and interview.This thesis can be mainly divided into five parts. The first part is introductionwhich gives the background and the purpose of this thesis. The second part is theliterature review. The third part is questionnaire and interview. In this study, thenon-English majors of Shen yang Normal University will be randomly sampled. Theauthor choose168students randomly and pick up10students to have an interview atthe same time. The author also interviews a special teacher and gives a comparison ofher in order to give a further study. the author discuss the results in chapter four. Inchapter five, the author show some findings and suggestions for the teaching in thefuture.
