With the remarkable development of the multi-media and the advent of the time of information technology, language is no longer the only method to compose meaning. In western countries, there appears a new way to analyze the speech, image, sound, gestures and other semiotic modes from the aspects of visual, auditory, and feelings. It is called Multimodal Discourse Analysis. This thesis tries to analyze the filmic discourse from the linguistic angle based on multimodality.This thesis adopts the case study research method to analyze the filmic discourse of The Legend of1900based on Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics and Kress&van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar. First, the thesis makes a recount on the definition and development of the multimodal discourse and filmic discourse analysis. Then the thesis makes the multimodal discourse analysis on the image of filmic discourse The Legend of1900from the three meanings in visual grammar, namely, the representation meaning, the interactive meaning and the compositional meaning. Then based on the theories of Functional Grammar and Visual Grammar, the thesis makes metafuntions analysis and interactive analysis of language.Through the research of this thesis, the author reaches the conclusion:Multimodal Discourse Analysis as a linguistic theory has its adaptability and feasibility in analyzing the elements of image and language in film. First, Kress&van Leeuwen’s Visual Grammar can analyze the image of film clearly. Second, Halliday’s Systemic Function Grammar has its practicality in analyzing the filmic language.
