"Youth" has long been an important subject of films. In recent years, the films showing the youth subculture emerge endlessly on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. This study selected the three important, contemporaneous film creators, carrying "Youth" label in their works, Jiang Wen, Wang Shuo and Edward Yang, to conduct a comparative study of their films involving youth on both sides of the strait. The conclusion of this study came from the comparison of three parts:the comparison of narrative in threes films which include In the Heat of the Sun directed by Jiang Wen, The Troubleshooters wrote by Wang Shuo and A Brighter Summer day directed by Edward Yang; the difference of Jiang Wen and Edward Yang as the authors; the comparison of the social and cultural environment in which three creators live. This study argues that the difference of their films in narrative of youth comes from the core consciousness of the author and dissimilarly social and cultural circumstances on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. First of all, the growth experiences of the director play a decisive impact on the formation of the core consciousness of the author. By the comparison of the experiences of Jiang Wen as a "Da Yuan" child and Edward Yang’s life in military dependents’ village, this study explained the heroic complex showing in Jiang Wen’s films and the reason why Edward Yang tends to analyze the adolescent identity confusion in his works. Second, through the analysis on different political, social and cultural atmosphere at the end of the80’s to the early90’s on both sides, the study showed the realistic foundation for the trend of anti elitism and postmodern narrative strategies which were presented in Wang Shuo and Jiang Wen’s films and the root on which realism in Edward Yang’s works based. In order to have a more comprehensive point of view on similarities and differences of the narrative of youth in films on Mainland and Taiwan, this study not only involved the study of film narrative, as well as linked the works with the creators themselves, the society and the social, cultural environment.
