A Comparative Study On Two Chinese Translations Of Catch-22from Perspective Of Seed Transplanting

By a comparative study on the typical postmodernist fiction Catch-22’s twoChinese translations, this thesis finds out a lot of seed transplanting phenomena, or tobe more exact, there exists a core “seed” waiting to be transplanted. Susan Bassnettput forward the opinion of seed transplanting primarily to analyze poetry translation,but since Catch-22and poetry share a lot in common in language, form andindeterminate content, this thesis tentatively adopts seed transplanting as a guide tothe analysis of seed transplantation phenomena, including seed identification beforetransplanting, seed preservation or mutation during transplanting and seed testingafter transplanting, aiming to solve the problem of how to translate Catch-22loadedwith postmodernist features.Major findings include, seed transplanting featuring subjectivity should befurther improved to guide translation; just like the indeterminate content,“seed”defies any specific definition, but in essence, it refers to the core spirit of the originaltext and varies with different circumstances; mutations can be devided into intentionalmutation and unintentional mutation; in the translation of Catch-22, analogical andcompensational translation strategies are highly recommended. It is hoped that thisthesis shed some light both on theoretical and practical translation studies onCatch-22.
