My Country and My People, written in English by Lin Yutang, is regarded as his representative in western literary world. It covers a wide range of subjects including the society, history and culture of China. After it was published, it has caused a great sensation in the West, and it has been successively translated into many languages. Up until now, there are four Chinese versions of My Country and My People. Among them, Huang Jiade’s version in1930s and Hao Zhidong&Shen Yihong’s version in1980s are more popular among readers. Although these two versions met the expectations of target readers in their own times, there are still differences between them due to different factors, likes ideology, poetics and so on. Thus, this thesis takes manipulation theory as theoretical perspective, and makes a comparative study between Huang’s version and Hao&Shen’s version.According to Andre Lefevere’s manipulation theory, translation can not conduct in a vacuum but comes under the influence of many factors, such as ideology, poetics and patronage. This thesis mainly takes Lefevere’s ideology, poetics and patronage as breakthrough point. Firstly, from the macro perspective, the influence of ideological, poetic and patronage factors on translators’ choices of strategies of two Chinese translations is analyzed; then, from the micro perspective, the thesis makes a concrete analysis of translation strategies of two translations. Instead of evaluating the goodness and badness of two translations, the author, based on the differences of them, attempts to illuminate the causes of different translation strategies adopted by different translators in different periods. At last, in the context of globalization, the thesis reflects on translated literature as one of the main carriers in the cultural exchanges, and it continues to play a rather important role in the cultural exchanges between China and the West. Then, with enlarging and deepening of the international cultural communication, more and more people pay more attention to the significant role of foreignization in translation study. Thus, from the diachronic perspective, foreignization will become the trend of translation strategy in the future.
