Through reading and analyzing Flannery O’Connor and Li Bihua’s work, this thesis interprets the creative thinking, creative background and the different writing styles of these two writers from the perspective of ugliness and ugliness theory. At the same time this thesis explores the modern value of ugliness through the comparison of different ugliness of these two writers. According to the content and research purpose, this thesis expounds from the following aspects.In the introduction, the author makes a brief introduction to Flannery O Connor and Li Bihua’s works and their personal information. Body part is divided into three chapters. Chapter One mainly explores the reasons of ugliness perspective of these two writers including the definition and value of ugliness, background, creative experiences, religious views and female consciousness. This chapter makes a detailed introduction to the background, which paves the way for the following studies. Chapter Two compares two writers and their works. Specifically, it discusses the comparison of the ugly male and female image, the comparison of the scene, the environment, language, psychology, and portrait, the ugliness Style comparison including symbolism, grotesque. Chapter Three mainly explores the influence of ugliness and creation of these two writers on the background of the differences between eastern and western cultures. Fatalism, religion and ugliness, women’view and ugliness, the modern value of ugliness are included.There are many reasons for the comparison of the thesis. First of all, they are almost at the same time, have the same background and cultural differences. Second, they are women writers who have the independent female consciousness. Third, they are good at describing the ugly human nature and have the similar tendency of ugliness. Based on the differences and similarities of these two writers, this thesis explores the deep intention of creation.
