| As the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in2005, Harold Pinter(1930-2008) is considered as the most successful playwright in Great Britain after the die of George Bernard Shaw, and also the greatest playwright in the world. The plays of Pinter are so unique that the word "Pinteresque" is created to describe the features of Pinter’ plays, and this word "Pinteresque" is included in the The Oxford English Dictionary.This paper is divided into four parts:the heading of the first part is Pinter’ life and literature life of Pinter, the heading of the second part is about the inheritance of English drama literature tradition by Pinter, the heading of the third part is the transcendence of English drama literature tradition by Pinter, the heading of the fourth part is promoter of the contemporary drama.Chapter one is about the life of Pinter, Pinter’s plays and the periods of Pinter’s literature life. This chapter briefly introduces Pinter’s family background, his growth, especially several important things in his growth, and his literature life’s happening, development and the ending. At last, all Pinter’s plays are divided into3periods.Chapter two mainly explains the inheritance of English drama literature tradition by Pinter. Firstly, it briefly introduces the history of English drama literature and his deep tradition; then comparing with three most grateful playwrights in English drama literature respectively; it analyzes the inheritance from the aspects of scenery, theme, and Theatrical genres.Chapter three is mainly about the transcendence of English drama literature tradition by Pinter, and explores the unique features in Pinter’s plays which are different from the English drama literature tradition. This chapter is consist of three parts:the closed room, the unpredictable dialogue and characters who are trying to control each other, and explains these feature by analyzing his plays.Chapter four is mainly about the contribution of Pinter to English contemporary drama, and the world’s contemporary drama. With the spread of news that Pinter’ Nobel Prize Award, more and more Chinese scholars focus Pinter’s plays, but mostly they studies the school of his plays. The innovation of this dissertation is that it focuses the inheritance and transcendence of English drama literature tradition from the perspective of history of English drama literature. |
