| In recent years, with the increase of international prestige and commercial trade home and abroad, more local enterprises of Liaoning Province seek for the chance to cooperate with other advanced international enterprises, under which circumstance, the related department of Liaoning Province issued "The Famous Brands of Liaoning Province" as a promotional material with the aim of demonstrating local enterprises during the officials’ foreign trips. This report based on the Translation Project of "The Famous Brands of Liaoning Province" deals with Chinese to English translation of its first part with Halliday’s Functional Grammar as its rationale. The whole report mainly focuses on constructing semantical features of the translated text and on analyzing certain modifications and problems regarding semantical construction of the transation process of this time.The report, to begin with, provides a general introduction concerning company profile, as well as the background and content of "The Famous Brands of Liaoning Province". In addition, it consequently demonstrates the basic ideas of Halliday’s Functional Grammar, based on which the report elaborates the semantical construction of the translation practice of this time, which is divided into two sections i.e., initial preparation and construction process. During the first part, the report studies the cultural and situational context of original and translated texts and then probes extensively into the subsemantical systems of the original text such as transitivity, voice, mood, modality, theme-rheme structure, and cohesion. During the second part, the report switches the semantical features of original text to those of translated text based on their similarities regarding cultural and situational contexts and finally gets the semantical features represented according to the characteristics of Chinese and English. Apart from that, the report also analyzes some deliberate changes and certain deficiencies in the semantic construction with proposing mentor’s advice from perspectives of Functional Grammar. At last, the report reaches a conclusion with regard to the significance of semantical construction and application of translators’subjective initiatives, based on which it further demonstrates the guidance of Functional Grammar to translation practice in future in order to extract knowledge out of practice, and to propose requests to translators accordingly. |
