Critical discourse analysis, as an emerging subject concerning discourse analysis, aims to reveal the encoded ideologies by analyzing the linguistic features on the surface structure of language as well as the social, cultural and historical background. Moreover, it aims to further disclose the complex relationship among language, power and ideology. It is worth pointing out that previous CDA studies on news discourses mainly focus on the analysis of linguistic features, while the influences of sociocultural practices are often neglected. Hence, this paper will integrate the text with its discursive and sociocultural practices so as to make the analytical result more valid. This paper respectively selects three news reports concerning the "purchase" of Diaoyu Islands and its follow-up issues from the New York Times and China Daily. The analysis is carried out within the analytical framework of Fairclough—the three-dimensional model, namely description, interpretation and explanation. Description focuses on the analysis of news texts. On basis of Halliday’s SFG, the text analysis is carried out from three aspects: lexical choice, transitivity and modality. Interpretation mainly analyzes the discursive practices of news texts. Based on the theory of intertextuality, the analysis at this level is conducted from two aspects:news sources and reporting modes. Moreover, at the explanation level, the sociocultural practices of news discourses are to be analyzed by taking the social background and power relations into consideration. The analysis at this level aims to explain the differences of Sino-US news reports at the text level and discursive level, thus to further discloses the differences in the attitudes and ideologies held by Chinese news media and American news media towards Diaoyu Islands issue. Moreover, this paper also intends to raise the general public’s language awareness and enhance their anti-control consciousness to public discourses.
