The doctrine and concept of generic intertextuality is first put forward by our domestic professor Xin Bin. It has been widely studied in the field of literary theory and discourse analysis. At present, a number of foreign linguists focus on the analysis of generic intertextuality in text. As the structure or discourse of news texts is made up or mixed by writers selecting from different channels, their structures are supposed to have the previous genres of different texts. The thesis aims to explore generic intertextuality in news reports from China Daily and Reuters, to reveal a certain feature and structural characteristic which the news report owns, and to indicate that generic intertextuality is the original matters of the emergence of new genres and also the fundamental feature of texts. The analysis of news report functions as a means to discuss the important role the news texts played in belief, values, social relations and social status. The thesis takes the definition of genre structure potential proposed by Hasan, generic intertextuality theorized by Norm Fairclough and Xin Bin to analyze news report as the a theoretical model. Firstly, Swales defines genre as a class of communicative events. Different genres prescribe different structures. The genre analysis of news report aims to reveal the existent meaning potential and discover the variations of genres.Secondly, in the theoretical system of Fairclough, the interdiscursivity he focused on is composed of genre, discourse and style, while Xin Bin defines it in his book Critical Linguistics:Theory and Application as a combination of three elements----style, register and genre. Thus, according to the definition proposed by Fairclough and Xin Bin, the generic intertextuality of news is analyzed as three parts, the mixture of genres, mixture of discourses and mixture of registers. Abundant data for the analysis of news reveal that the mixture of genres is what narration, description, discussion or explication are mixed into a news report. Meanwhile, the combination of diagrammatic presentation and word is often a way for writers to convey their intentions, for example, such visual auxiliaries as bar diagram, map. Fairclough regards the diagrammatic presentation as non-verbal. So, the news report is also the combination of verbal and non-verbal language. Register is made up of field, tenor and mode. Consequently, adopting the devices of generic intertextuality to support the propositions is persuasive and convincing. News report is an indispensable part of the people’s social life. Writers not only do convey message to the public through news reports, but the readers also get information from them. That is an interaction between social public. Finally, the thesis hopes to find out a specific structure of news report and reveal the importance of news report in social community.
