Alice Walker is one of the famous writers in contemporary American literature.As a black woman and a writer, Alice Walker keenly senses the special situation of theblack people, especially the black women in the society. So she committed to the greatcause of “survival and wholeness of entire people, male and female”, and formed herinfluential thoughts of womanism which is fully played in her novel The Color Purple,which is regarded as her best works.This paper applies the post-colonial theory and Alice Walker’s womanism toanalyze her representative works The Color Purple so as to have a comprehensiveunderstanding of the white cultural hegemony as well as the plight of the black,particularly the black women, foregrounding the womanist great efforts to subvert thewhite cultural hegemony of religion, race and gender. As a womanist, Alice Walkershows her great love and special attention to the national culture in the works TheColor Purple. It is just because of the attachment and identity of the national culturethat the womanist in The Color Purple could subvert the various suppression of thewhite cultural hegemony and walk out of the plight.
