The notion of “Xing” is the earliest as one of six meanings of poem or six poems, it hasbeen proposed in Zhouli. Chunguan and Great Preface, but without explanation. Since then,the interpretations of Xing are various, and it has always been the focus of researchers todiscuss.In the Book of Songs, Xing is a specific actions and behavior, at this time Xing has notbeen promoted to the category of aesthetic art. Confucius emphasizes that poetry can Xing,and combines Xing with the function of poetry. It was admired by the researchers. Maozhuanmarked Xing style uniquely, and its greatest contribution is regard Xing as the writingmethods of poetry, which sets up the traditional Confucianism. With the advent ofself-awareness in Wei Jin and Six Dynasties, the understanding of Xing, represented by LiuXie and Zhong Rong, gets rid of the influence of the traditional Confucianism ideas gradually,and begin to understand Xing from the perspective of poetry creation and readers’appreciation. Zheng zhong and Zheng xuan’s explanations of Xing, starts the two majorschools of poem theory in the Tang Dynasty: one emphasis on Xing-ji and allegory of poem.It tends to explain Bi-xing from its social function, and this is represented by Chen Ziang、YuanZhen、Bai Juyi and so on; the other emphasis on Xing-xiang、artistic conception of poem,and it explains Bi-xing from the writing methods and the character of image thinking, and thisis represented by Yin Fan、 Jiao Ran and so on. Zhu Xi has the greatest effect on theinterpretation of “Xing” in the Song Dynasty. His concepts are widely accepted and regardedas important milestones during that period. Yan Yu’s Xing-qu enriches the interface study ofXing. Many composite interfaces were generated by “Xing”, such as Xingji、Xingxiang、Xingqu and so on are complete.Through a brief combing of the study of “Xing”, you can see that how Xing evolves intoa rich concept. Xing’s connotation and composite interface have already been very full beforethe Yuan Dynasty. From the world——writer——works——reader, Xing’s connotationinvolves the reciprocal transformation of the four literary elements. Why the definition ofXing exists some misunderstandings, the reason is that the angle of research and starting pointare different in different groups. So they have access to the different aspects of Xing.
