A large number of vague languages exist in business letters, while researchers seem to pay littleattention to their translation. This thesis discusses the translation of vague language in business lettersfrom the perspective of relevance translation theory, and focuses on three research questions:1) Whatsituations addresser will use vague languages in business letters writing and what are their functions;2)Why the relevance translation theory can be used to explain the translation of vague language inbusiness letters;3) What translation strategies should be adopted by translator to translate vaguelanguage in business letters under the guidance of relevance translation theory. On the basis of theexisting researches of vague language translation and their functions in business letters, this thesis willexplore how to use relevance translation theory to guide the translation practice of this kind of speciallanguage, then to summarize relative translation strategies.This thesis is divided into four chapters. It mainly studies the translation of vague language inbusiness letters. In the first part of the first chapter, it reviews the studies of vague language, andanalyzes the differences between fuzziness and vagueness, ambiguity and vagueness, generality andvagueness separately. The differences have a guiding significance on the translation of vague language.The second part makes a classification of vague language in business letters based on their functions inbusiness letters. The third part of this chapter reviews the previous studies of translation of vaguelanguage in business letters and puts forward why the relevance translation theory can be used toexplain the translation of this special language.The second chapter presents the points of relevance translation theory. It highlights the applicationof relevance translation theory to the translation of vague language in business letters.From the perspective of relevance translation theory, the third chapter combines the classificationsof vague language in business letters to sum up their corresponding translation methods.The fourth chapter is the conclusion part. Studies suggest that relevance translation theory hasexplanatory power on the translation of vague language in business letters; if translator can consciouslymake use of relevance translation theory in the process of translation, it will have a positive effect in thetranslation of vague language in business letters, so as to improve the overall quality of business letters translation.
