The human society has fully entered an era of information since the beginning of21st century. With the surging development of Mobile Internet and the Internet of Things, information can instantly reach every corner of the world. Everyone can be the center of information collection and spreading by communicating with other people and things at any time. Under such circumstances, the function of traditional books as a tool of storing and spreading information weakens greatly while e-books, on-line novels and so on rise. Faced with this situation, book designers, as builders of modern book shapes, must carry out deep reflection and research, so as to discover how to keep this industry updated, how to take it to a more comprehensive and more multi-layer stage, and how to keep up with human civilization as a new role.This thesis tries to study books as esthetic individuals instead of information containers and to develop their own qualities as a kind of material. By exploring the history of the development of book shapes, complying them with corresponding social environments and studying the reasons, this thesis concludes that the main factors that affect the materialization of books are human needs, the development of industry, social culture and the personal expression of designers. Besides, this thesis tries to describe the objectification results of human emotions in book designs with a more comprehensive concept of materialized space. This thesis advocates to, with the concept of construction, design the materialized space of books and at the meantime seek for deeper construction of spiritual space, demonstrating that books explain themselves by way of materialized space and spiritual space from different angles, namely architecture, psychology and psychological aesthetics.
