On The Translation Strategies Of Film Subtitles Under The Perspective Of Cultural Turn

1990saw cultural turn be a new trend in translation study and it has achieved proud success during a short period of20years. As a new perspective, cultural turn enriches the translation study and extends translation to extra-linguistic study, which also involves social, political and cultural elements existing in society. Thus makes people begin to focus on how internal and external factors influence the translation and take their attention from the linguistic research to social culture research. The film, regarded as an important medium of culture, makes subtitle translation needs to be studied under the perspective of cultural turn.According to the perspective of cultural turn putting forward by Susan Bassnett and Andre Lefevere, the thesis, taking an Oscar film Life of Pi as a case, is going to study the translation strategies of film subtitle. It analyzes the characteristic of subtitle translation and the performance of subtitle translation in the film Life of Pi from five cultural levels, namely languages, religions, customs, proper nouns and food. The analysis finds out that adopting foreignization of translation strategy in film is better than domestication on promoting cultural communication and transmission, but in some circumstance, domestication couldn’t be abandoned. Therefore, foreignization should be picked up as much as possible in film subtitle. Meanwhile, domestication should be adopted properly. The translator, as a cultural transmitter, needs to enrich his or her own knowledge and deal with the cultural difference. Thus helps the audience have a deeper understanding of the culture and promotes the cultural communication and transmission. The author hopes this thesis is helpful and proposed for future film subtitle translation study, thereby making a contribution to the cultural communication and transmission around the world.
