With the deepening globalization, especially when English is still used as a major tool for communication, it is more and more evident that critical thinking has become a trend. How to cultivate critical thinking has been highly valued by the Chinese teachers and how to applicate the critical reading strategies (CRS) to the reading class has been placed to an unprecedented high place. Recently, lots of scholars and researchers have devoted a lot to the critical reading strategies; in China, however, we still have a long way to go. Therefore, the author here aims to analyze the application of critical reading strategies to the reading comprehension in TEM-8, hoping it can enhance the students’ reading ability.The author analyzed the related theories and did the experiment to achieve the goal. The present experiment was carried out in the course of Advanced English in the English department of City College of Wuhan University of Science and Technology. Two classes including60students were chosen as the subjects for the experiment. One class was the Experiment Class (EC) including30students and the other was the Control Class (CC). The students in the EC were taught the critical reading strategies and received corresponding training, while the students in the CC were taught the reading skills in a traditional way. The results show that the students in the EC can do better than those in the CC when receiving the test of reading comprehension of TEM-8after a semester.Based on the research results, critical reading strategies should be highlighted in the teaching of English reading, for they can enhance students’reading ability and cultivate their innovation, association, critical thinking ability and language using ability. Besides, the author hopes that the research can provide some scientific evidence for the further teaching innovation.The paper comprises six parts. The author begins the first part with the background, significance and characteristics of critical reading; the second part provides the general literature review; then it is followed by the third part about the application of the critical reading strategies to the reading comprehension of TEM-8; the fourth part tells the details of the experiment design; and the fifth part shows us the data analysis; at last, it comes to the last part about the conclusion of the whole.
