This thesis is mainly a comparative study of wind metaphor in Chinese and English languages, it is based on synchronic perspective, attempting to analyze the metaphor of wind with conceptual metaphor theory, and trying to explain the different modes of thinking between Chinese people and Western people. Also the thesis explores the effects that the wind metaphor may have on Chinese and English languages, in this way, we can see the interactive relationship among metaphor、language and thinking. Apart from the introduction and conclusion, there are four chapters left. The second chapter makes an investigation of the etymology and original meaning of "wind" and "风". We must clarify the whole meaning of wind, in order to find out the conceptual metaphor of wind. I have read many dissertations and relevant books for reference, hoping to exhaust the different meanings of wind. The third chapter relies on the investigations of the previous one. This chapter summarizes the similar metaphors of wind in Chinese and English languages, and divides them into four aspects:in terms of the direction、shape、movement and energy of wind. This chapter also discusses the reason of these metaphors, the reasons mainly include language、cognition、psychology and geography. The fourth chapter summaries the differences of wind metaphor in Chinese and English languages, there are many examples which help to explain the unique metaphor of wind in Chinese and in English. The fifth chapter puts the relationship between metaphor and language in a different way. We’ve talked a lot about how language affect metaphor, this chapter explores how semantic、grammar and pragmatics are affected by the use of metaphor separately, so we can figure out the influence of metaphor. The introduction is an overview of the state of metaphor theory, and the meaning method of this thesis. The conclusion restates some points of this thesis, and point out some limitations.
