As a linguistic rhetorical device, parody usually takes advantage of some existinglanguage forms (such as phonetics and grammar structures) to convey newinformation. Nowadays, it is more and more widely used as a strategy in the publicmedia such as newspapers, magazines, and TV commercials and interpersonalcommunications. However, previous studies of parody mainly focus on its rhetoricfunction. Afterwards, with the rise of cognitive linguistics, scholars began to shiftattention from the rhetorical field to the cognitive linguistics. This paper starts fromthe language users’ psychology of the main communicative purpose, from theperspective of Meta-Pragmatic Awareness Theory, combined with ConceptualBlending Theory to study the generation mechanism of parody.Previous studies on parody were mainly focused on four fields: rhetoricallinguistics, cognitive linguistics, pragmatic linguistics, semantic linguistics, of coursethese studies have enriched the studies on parody. However, these studies have theirdeficiencies as well. From the point of view of rhetoric and semantics, researches areon the usage of parody in varied conditions, paying little or no attention to itsgeneration mechanism. As the researches deepen on, the cognitive linguistics anglehas come down to the generation and interpretation of parody, while theses studies arelimited to the structure, ignoring the basic and essential generation mechanism ofparody behind. The studies of parody from pragmatics mainly stay in the relevanceprinciple, contextual interference and pragmatic inference, while losing sight of theleading principle of the application of the fundamental psychological factors behind, which plays an important role in the generation of parody. Cognitive linguistic studiesof parody are mostly on their psychological cognitive interpretation of the form ofparody. These studies have one thing in common. They were not aware of the mostbasic psychological motive driving the generation and interpretation of parody, whichis the generation mechanism of parody. Based on the achievements made by previousscholars, this paper tries to set up a new theoretical analysis framework to probe into the basic generation mechanism of parody, trying to make up the limitations ofprevious studies to some extent.Based on the Meta-Pragmatics Awareness proposed by Verschueren andConceptual Blending Theory proposed by Fauconnier and Turner, a new analyticalframework Meta-Pragmatics Awareness and Conceptual Blending Theory (MAB forshort) is proposed in this thesis in order to interpret the generation mechanism ofparody. Through the analysis of the generation mechanism of parody, the frameworkof MAB becomes more persuasive. With the lead-in of Meta-Pragmatic Awareness, readers can gain a better understanding of the generation mechanism of parody. Thestudy has two major contributions: firstly, it proposes a new analytical model MABbased on the Meta-Pragmatic Awareness Theory in Pragmatics and ConceptualBlending Theory in Cognitive Linguistics, and applying it as the theoreticalframework to the analysis and discussion of the generation mechanism of parody fromthe perspective of phonetics and grammar structure. Secondly, according to Mr. ChenWangdao’s classification of parody, this paper respectively illustrates examples toexpound the two categories, and tries to do some researches on the generationmechanism of the parody, trying to make certain contribution to the studying andinterpreting the generation mechanism of parody. Finally, the deficiencies of this verypaper are pointed out, for the goodness of further study, and a little advice is putforward.
