Before giving this translation report, the author of this thesis has finished the E-C translation of Preface, Prologue, Epilogue, the Eighteenth-century Background, the Nineteenth-century Foreground, Personalities and Glossary of the book Beethoven:His Life and Music. The author finished this report according to the translation process, the problems met in the translation and the solutions of the problems.Firstly, the author introduces the life of Beethoven and summarizes the main idea of the book. Besides, the author analyses the language and stylistic features of the original text. And then, the author gives an introduction of the requirements of the translation task. Finally, the author demonstrates the three translation processes:preparation for the translation task, the translation process and the post-edition of the translation task,In the main body of the translation report, the discussion of the text has been divided into two parts. One is the problems and methods on long sentence translation, and the other is the differences between formal and informal styles. When we do the translation work on long sentences, we can break long sentences into shorter sentences, remain long sentences as long sentences, or change the order of the elements of the long sentences, in order to make sure that the translation is more fit in the target language. Different language styles have different methods for translation. The author of this thesis uses a variety of examples to show the differences between formal and informal language styles.In formal part, the words are more formal and concise. While in informal part, words become more vivid and lively. In Glossary and Personalities, translation should be faithful to the original text to convey the exact information to the readers.According Vermeer, every translation has an aim. Thus translation should be target-oriented meeting the requirements of commissioners, recipients and patronage facts. Thus the author of this book, the translator, takes this as her theory guidance to analyze sentences and their corresponding translation.At the end of the translation report, the author has made a summary of the whole translation task in order to throw the light on the future translation practice. Translation is not simply a task to convey the meaning in one language into another. Instead, it is a science as well as an art.The author fully understands through the process of translating that translation is never an easy word-for-word mechanical activity. We have a lot to consider before, in and after the translation such as the cultural background of the source text and its recipient in the target culture. This report sheds light upon future work.
