Shandong Of Overseas Chinese Has Effect On The Modern Shandong Society (1842-1927)

Shandong is a coastal province. Since the ancient times, a great many people of Shandong province are expatriated other countries because of the superior overseas traffic conditions and the influence of traditional culture. In the late period of Qing dynasty, thousands of local citizens of Shandong province lived in the poor conditions which were compelled to abandon their homeland. Most of overseas Chinese live in Siberia, and ten thousand Shandong of overseas Chinese emigrate in Korea. After The First World War, many overseas Chinese were repatriated to their homeland, but also thousands of them stayed in France. Besides, there are groups of Shandong of overseas Chinese going through the villages in Nanyang cities and towns for selling silk. Shandong of overseas Chinese have brave and hardworking characters, so they are equally important with Fujian and Guangdong of overseas Chinese in China’s modern history.Shandong of overseas Chinese are strongly influenced by the traditional Confucianism. Therefore, they have significant sense of homesickness. In order to show the feeling of their homeland, they had made a great contribution to industrialization education and politics, which caused an important effect of the society in the modern times.As to the aspect of economy, they found a number of modern manufacturing factories which involving a wide range such as the strength industry of textile and flour, also the emerging industry of matches and chemical dye. Most of the factories were established by overseas Chinese. Most of them were applied machinery production; even joint-stock form of organization had been occasionally used. They had send money to their relations from overseas which increased the development of banking industry. Also, the openness of oversea trade of Shandong has been enhanced with "Broker’s businessman". Even through there had been appeared a trend of oversea trades. In terms of social life, they effectively engaged in the revolution. Not only for the financial support, but also took part in the battles directly. Charity is another activity they were highly participated, especially when the disaster appeared. Furthermore, they realized that education is considerable significant for the future of China based on their own experiences. Hence, they had set up reformed academies in order to change the views and practice abilities of next generation. In addition, the goods which they brought from abroad had expanded people’s horizon and offer convenient for daily routine.
