During the renowned Harlem Renaissance occurred in1920s-30s America, it sprung up a large group of outstanding African American female writers, and Nella Larsen is one of the prominent ones. Nella Larsen and her works are awarded all kinds of rewards, especially her second novel Passing won Guggenheim fellowship since it was published in1929, and Larsen was the first black female writer to receive such honorable prize in African American literature.So far, many critics have made some achievements from the following perspectives: narrative strategies, theme, the comparison between Passing and some other literary works, the contrast between Passing and Larsen’s other literary works, post-modern characteristics and so on with regard to Passing.Among a serious of criticisms, some critics pay stress on a certain part of oppressions in Larsen’s works, however, no critic has conduct a deep and overall research on the interdisciplinary of her novel Passing. Thus, this thesis attempts to analyze the passing hypothesis of black women in Passing from the perspective of interdisciplinary based upon black feminism’s core concept.After a brief introduction to Nella Larsen, her literary works and literature review on Passing both at home and abroad, the thesis then introduces the core concept of black feminism criticism-interdisciplinary criticism paradigm in short, the thesis analyzes the novel’s interdisciplinary from the following perspectives:patriarchal oppression, gender oppression, class oppression and racial oppression. The thesis focuses on the two Afro-American protagonists’(Clare Kendry and Irene Redfield) passings and reveals their passings are doomed to fail in intertwined oppressions with patriarch, gender, class and race.As a conclusion, the thesis aims at exposing the failure of passing hypothesis of black women in Passing from the perspective of interdisciplinary criticism paradigm. Furthermore, the thesis not only provides a demonstrative mode for the readers to better understand the passing novels, on the other hand, it vividly presents a strong eagerness of Afro-American women for searching for a world with harmony, co-existence and balance between the black and the white, men and women.
