A Translation Project Report Of A Joyful Pilgrimage(Excerpts)

This is a project report on the translation of the first three chapters, Origines, Seeking, and The Wind Blows, selected from A Joyful Pilgrimage, which is written by the German female writer, Emmy Arnold. This part mainly relates how the writer and her husband,Albert Arnold, seek faith, set up faith, and practice Christian life, and describes the social unrest, people’s reaction, as well as the confusion, pondering, seeking, and easiness of the couple. In the translation, there emerges a number of problems such as the rendering of some English expressions, long sentences, and several poems. Based on the functional equivalence theory, the foregoing problems are resolved respectively. The English expressions are translated into responding Chinese idiomatic expressions; the long sentences are reorganized in Chinese; and the poems are translated, based on full understanding, into Chinese poems. The detailed solutions will be embodied in the paper.This project report consists of four parts:the first part gives a brief introduction to the project, including its origin, significance, and structure; the second part is the introduction to the background of the source text,including its author, edition, and main content; the third part is concerned with quality control, including the major problems in translation, a brief introduction to Nida’s functional equivalence theory, and translation skills used to settle the foregoing question; the fourth part concludes the experience, lessons, and enlightenment in the translation, and points out unresolved problems.
