The Influences Of League Of Legends On Physical Pain And Social Pain

Clinical researches using video game as one kind of treatment in reducing physical pain. This research uses the most famous online game----League of Legends as experimental material, to study its’ influences on physical pain and social pain.Study1investigates the influences of League of Legends on physical pain. Before and after the subjects played the League of Legends, we measured the physical pain threshold and pain endurance. The result suggests after playing the game, subjects’ pain threshold was significantly higher than before. The pain endurance is significantly increased too. The outcome of the game has no impact on the result.Study2investigates the influences of League of Legends on social pain. Experimental set up two groups, an experimental group and a control one. We first measure the experimental group’s baseline of social pain. Then the participants play the League of Legends, and measure the social pain again after the game. The control group is the same progress as experimental group but lack of playing game. Social pain is manipulated by remember the social exclusion experience in the past and paradigm of telling people that they would end up alone later in life. We also measure the social pain of the control group before and after the operation of social pain, the difference was significant, indicating successful operation of social pain. Results of repeated measures data of ANOVA suggest that social pain of participants in experimental group was significantly lower than the control group after exclusion. Outcome of the game does not affect the results.The two studies show that:League of Legends can significantly improve participant’s physical pain threshold and pain endurance, it can also buffer the social pain caused by social exclusion.Finally, the limitations of the present research were discussed; the future directions and practical value of this paper were provided.
