On Translation Of Fuzzy Words In Literature

The thesis concentrates on the translation of excerpts from the British women writer George Eliot’s realistic novel----The Mill on the Floss, which contains large amount of dialogues and detailed descriptions of action and psychology, thus brings out vivid images of each character. In this piece of work, various types of fuzzy words have been applied so as to achieve artistry of literature. This requires the translator to identify fuzziness and classify these different kinds of fuzzy words based on a deeper understanding of the original text as well as each type of fuzziness. Translation methods such as adding words and giving further explanation, which aim at conveying the connotation and denotation of these fuzzy words, are adopted. Thus resemblance to the original word can be gained in meaning, layout construction and style.The thesis is a case study of The Mill on the Floss (excerpts), it consists of five parts. The first part gives a task description, which involves the content, the significance and task of this research. The second part introduces the theories involved in fuzziness and translation criticism standards. Fuzzy words are classified into4categories, and the major differences between Chinese fuzzy words and English fuzzy word are presented. The third part focuses on the analysis of task process including preparation before translation, translation process and the revision. In the fourth part, case study is conducted via translation practice of the author. It mainly analyzes the types of fuzziness according to the theory base in part two and corresponding methods that deal with these fuzzy words. The last part draws a conclusion.Research on translation methods for fuzzy words is of great value both in theory and practice. Because of the resemblance in content, layout and style, the original aesthetic expressions can be attained. It is beneficial for introduction of outstanding foreign novels in China, enhancement on Chinese authors’literary creation ability and the translator’s translation skills on literature.
