College debate competition is a kind of rhetorical activity with performance properties. In the competition, college students use a variety of rhetorical strategies to support their arguments and refute views of the opposite side. The competitors must follow by some ethics to obtain the better rhetorical effects, to promote college debate competition to develop healthily in the long run. This article overall analyzes the pros and cons of college debate competition, and investigates in theory on the manifestations of ethical rhetoric principles in the debate competition and how to make the principles play a better leading pole.The article was divided to six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction which has three parts. Firstly, summarize the development process and the current situation of Chinese college debate competitions. Secondly, review the research achievements about college debate competition of some predecessors, and summarize the achievements and defects. The research on ethical rhetoric of college debate competition is slightly insufficient, waiting for supplement. Thirdly, explain the total design of this article, including the purpose, sources of the corpus, the thinking and methods of the research.The second chapter study on the positive significance and the defects of college debate competition. The positive significance includes six parts:broadening the field of knowledge, cultivating the dialectical thinking, strengthening the team consciousness, mastering the debating skills, improving the ability to respond, enriching the campus culture. The defects of college debate competition include five parts:the intended purpose is fuzzy; the grade of selecting debate topics is not high; the preparation before the competition is poor; debates are reduced to sophistry; neglect politeness on words and deeds.The third chapter makes preparation for combining ethical rhetoric and college debate competition. It totally combs the principles including the politeness principle, the principle of appropriateness,and the principle of "rhetoric made its sincerity", for that these principles are important reflections of ethical rhetoric. Then it analyzes the basic characteristics of ethical rhetoric. Ethical rhetoric emphasizes the importance of the ethical requirements in rhetorical activities, and is opposed to disregard the ethical requirements to achieve the rhetorical purpose by hook or by crook.The fourth chapter specially discusses the relationship between ethical rhetoric and college debate competition. It points out that the restrictions on college debate competition from ethical rhetoric are mainly reflected in that the contestants must abide by the politeness principle, the principle of appropriateness,and the principle of "rhetoric made its sincerity". As to how to carry out the three principles in the debate competition and how to overcome the difficulties in the process of carrying out the principles, it combines with concrete examples to give theoretical instructions.The fifth chapter bases on the individual research findings, and puts forward four suggestions on college debate competition, namely correcting the guiding ideology, improving the cultural grade, strengthening the organizational work, and completing the summary of the competition.The sixth chapter is the epilogue, which summarizes the main points of this article and puts forward the assumption of the future for making up for the shortcomings of the research.
