Dui Bu Dui And Dui As Discourse Markers:Evidence From Chinese Natural Discourse

Recently, there has been growing interest in a set of pragmatic expressions often referred to as discourse markers. In this thesis, asking-answer adjacency pairs dui bu dui ’right?’ and dui ’right’ are selected as objects of research. The placement of these forms in the sequential organization of talk-in-interaction as well as the speech activity in which they are used, their prosody and discourse function are analyzed. Formation causes and mechanism of discourse markers dui bu dui and dui are illuminated in detail. Commonal-ity and individuality of linguistic function are disclosed from the perspective of cross-language, which may contribute to a better understanding of positive words such as dui, shi, hao. Our research on functions of grammatical forms dui bu dui and dui is based on the theories of Emergent Grammar and Interactional Linguistics. Numerous cor-pus-based conversations and advanced Praat voice analysis software are utilized to sup-port the conclusions about the discourse function of two linguistic forms and to analyze their phonetic features in this thesis.The thesis includes five chapters with more than58,000characters in total.In chapter one, the latest development and research about natural spoken discourse, discourse markers and grammatical forms dui bu dui and dui have been summarized, and the deficiency in the present research about these objects is exposed.In chapter two, the theories of Emergent Grammar, Discourse Analysis and Inte-ractional Linguistics are high lightly introduced. The research methods of this thesis, the corpora and the transcription symbols are presented in this chapter.In chapter three, the placement of dui bu dui in the sequential organization of talk-in-interaction, its prosodic features and discourse functions are investigated through the qualitative and quantitative analysis. We attempt to interpret the forming causes and mechanism of dui bu dui’s new discourse functions.In chapter four, the placement of dui in the sequential organization of talk-in-interaction and discourse functions are investigated through the qualitative and quantitative analysis, and we provide reasons why the new function of dui occurs.In chapter five, summary and conclusions are concisely drawn.
